Historical Overview
The territory that currently corresponds to the canton of Coto Brus was inhabited by indigenous people of the so-called group of the Bruncas, which was the domain of cocts. The region was discovered by Don Perafán de Ribera in 1571, when he carried out his journey to the southwest part of our country and then toured the Caribbean coast.

In 1601, Mr. Gonzalo Vázquez de Coronado, acting governor, opened the Mule Path (Camino de Mulas) that led from Cartago to Panama, which was primarily used for the trade of these animals at the Portobelo Fairs; a land route that passed through the area of the current canton of Coto Brus.
