Historical Overview
Starting in 2022, the canton of Puerto Jiménez is created by law. Thus being the thirteenth municipality of the province of Puntarenas whose territory includes the district of Puerto Jiménez. The installation of the Municipality of Puerto Jiménez took place on May 1, 2024. The canton is made up of a single district that is Puerto Jiménez, made up of the towns that it already owned before its creation as a canton. The head of the canton will be Puerto Jiménez and the municipal government is located in the town of Puerto Jiménez Centro.

It has an area of 722.56 km² and an average altitude of 2 meters above sea level. It occupies a little more than half of the Osa Peninsula, with its western boundary being the district of Bahía Drake in Osa. A significant part of its territory corresponds to protected forest areas, the most prominent being Corcovado National Park, as well as the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve, both shared with the canton of Osa.
