Dominga Bejarano Palacios
more than 10 years carrying out this activity.
Belongs to the Besigo Crafts Association
How did they learn to do it?
Her mother taught her how to make the mastate (fibre on which the paintings can be made), then how to remove the pita thread and how to give it color with natural tints. Then she taught her how to sew and make dresses, in addition to how to make the diwe töra (pints or decorations of the dress) and that is how she began her interest in making the craft that characterizes her people, as a way of transmitting to others what her culture possesses.

How do you do the activity?
The activity is the elaboration of handicrafts, for which you must organize your time, not only to obtain the raw material, when it is made by itself, but you must take the time to prepare the threads or the base fiber for the paintings. However, Dominga indicates that she is not dedicated to making only one type of craft at a time, but that she alternates it and produces several types of products simultaneously. In the case of the mastate, you must dedicate up to a week to have the product ready to paint and for the pita thread you also need a week to have it ready to use.
