The La Amistad Water and Biodiversity Route project was first mentioned at the 4th workshop held by the community leadership of the Pittier district on July 19, 2010, for the updating of the Development Plan. In October 2019, the Buenos Aires-Coto Brus Territorial Council for Rural Development revived the “Water Route” initiative and, in its 8th ordinary session of 2019, agreed to request that the local governments of Coto Brus and Buenos Aires promote the creation of a commission to manage the “Water Route” project as a tourist attraction from Pittier de Coto Brus to the Convent of Buenos Aires. In its 200th ordinary session, the Coto Brus Municipal Council declared the Water Route Tourist Project to be of cantonal interest; the opinion of the Buenos Aires local government on this matter is still pending.

In ordinary session 02-2020, the Territorial Council appoints a commission to follow up on the project, within the framework of this commission, a reference map of the route in question is prepared with the support of the private company (Pindeco).

Ruta de las Aguas is a tourist destination located in the south of the country, specifically in the buffer zone of the La Amistad International Park of Buenos Aires and Coto Brus, which covers more than 223,044 km in length, mostly in the cantonal road network with tourist enterprises.
